A few nights ago, Lacy and Dave were home on their own, so at bedtime, Lacy snuggled down with her daddy in our big bed. She picked her nose and had a big booger on it, then asked Dave, "Daddy, what do I do? I've already brushed my teeth!"

The Big Question
Lacy asked me yesterday how the baby got into mommy's tummy. I knew that question would come someday, but honestly, it threw me for a loop! I told her something along the lines of, Daddy has a seed that goes to mommy's egg, and then that is a baby, and it grows and grows and grows.

June is my worst month.
That's why you're getting my first blog post today. And it's not even a good one. Just an explanation, and a promise of some good blog posts coming soon!
June has always been a bad month for me. My allergies kick into high gear somewhere around the last week of May and the first week of June, and they stick around until the first week of July. My allergies are pretty debilitating for me at times. Some days are worse than others. The bad days are the days that my eyes swell shut and my eyeballs are actually puffy. My nose runs like a faucet, the roof of my mouth itches, and I can't stop sneezing. Prescriptions don't do any good, either. Claritin is a joke. Zyrtec puts me to sleep, and it doesn't do a darned thing. I thought my saving grace was Xyzal, but when I take it, I am so exhausted, even when I take it the night before.
On top of that, I am in my first trimester, the tired trimester. I have had days where I stayed in bed until 11 or so. Lacy gets breakfast for herself and for Rose. She's such a good helper. Then I put in a musical (the current favorite is Annie, but Sound of Music is always appreciated, too) and let the kids watch it until I feel good enough to empty the dishwasher and lie down again.
Fortunately, I don't really get too sick on top of the exhaustion. I guess I lucked out in that regard. But I do occasionally feel nauseated, and once got really sick. But I'm not complaining about that at all!
I didn't mean to turn this into a whine fest, but I guess that's kind of what this became. Sorry. I'm starting to feel much, much better (THANK YOU, June rain!) and am ready to download pictures and start blogging about some topics that I'm really passionate about (since I'm pregnant, pregnancy and birth are on my mind, and it's a topic I love reading about and studying. If I were a nicer person, I'd be a midwife or a doula for sure).
I guess I'll end by saying that other than not getting Rose to sleep until 11 tonight, today was a great day! My friend Diane offered to watch my kids so I could go to the temple this morning. I returned home and watched a musical with my husband and kids (Annie, of course!), had tacos (YUM!), and had a very productive Young Women planning meeting, while also baking bread (YUM!). To add to the joy of today, Dave worked four hours, and is working three days in a row 12 hour shifts, most or all of which will be overtime pay (Union rules and all!). He's starting another project on Monday that may last several days. Hopefully there's more coming! I'm so happy that Dave is working! He's so much happier when he has a job.

Telling Lacy
It was really fun to let Lacy know that I was pregnant. I really wanted to tell my sister first (after Dave, obviously), so it was fun that we had her in our car driving up to Zion's camp a week ago. They had too many passengers in their car, so Les was the one voted off the Suburban and sat between two carseats in our van. Leslie got in, and I said, "So, I have a special secret to share. Do you want to guess what it is?" Leslie's eyes got big immediately and knew exactly what I was talking about. Since we weren't exactly trying, this was unexpected news, for sure! It took a little while for Lacy to figure it out. OK, we told her. But she didn't get it.
Finally, after about a half an hour or so, I said something about how "the egg hatched" and finally it clicked. MOMMY IS PREGNANT!!! Suddenly she couldn't stop talking about how excited she was! "I'm super very very very very very very ONE HUNDRED excited!!!" When we got to the camp site, within about 5 minutes everyone in our group knew we were expecting. The next day, when other people began arriving, they all knew within minutes of arriving as well.
The only reason she didn't end up telling every living soul at church the Sunday after we went camping was because it was Rose's birthday, and she told everyone that news instead! But she's starting to spread the news to her teachers in Primary now that Rose's birthday is over.

Happy Birthday to my Mother
Mom, today you turn 60 years old, a milestone in your life. I'm glad that you decided to have children after Leslie. I've been able to become a mother myself and bring two lovely daughters into this world. I hope you have had a great birthday, Mom. I love you!

Sickie
My allergies are acting up today. Bad. I tried helping Dave with some outdoor work, but I was useless. I went home with the kids instead. So Dave worked for several hours while I rested at home, reading a book and trying to watch the kiddos.
They're so sweet. I was just not very nice today at all and despite that, they were pretty good. Other than some scolding for playing in the front yard that I had to do this afternoon (no way I could supervise them for that!). They were very sweet, trying to take care of their mother. Rose brought me a pillow and covered me with blankets, instructed me to close my eyes, and sang me some lullabies, and Lacy made me peppermint tea sweetened with (too much) tylenol, I mean xylitol. She's a very independent girl who knows her way around the kitchen already! She ended up making cups of tea for herself and for Rose, as well.
Now, I've practiced piano (a very small amount today since I'm feeling unwell) and I'm taking an allergy pill (which makes me incredibly drowsy) and going to bed. Hopefully I'll feel well tomorrow!

Where are you going again?
Lacy's grandma has been talking to her about taking her to Leavenworth after she gets back from her mission in Germany. Lacy is very excited about that! But she's a little confused about where she's going.
Lemonwars. Yes, Lemonwars. Oh, and Turner's not going. Poor Turner.
And yes, that's a carrot she's eating. My kids take whole carrots out of the fridge and eat them, a la Bugs Bunny.
Her bags are packed, she's ready to go. Fortunately I'm still behind on laundry, so even though she put every single article of clothing that were in her drawers in her backpack, it wasn't too many!
Of course, books are of the upmost importance, so she took books with her. Especially since Grandma sold it to her with book reading while there! Good thing she didn't say anything about possibly seeing "Sound of Music," too!

Round up them kindergarteners
Today Lacy, Dave and I went to our local elementary school's Kindergarten Round Up event. It was a lot of fun, and my baby is now enrolled in Kindergarten! She got to ride a bus, do some crafts, see the classrooms, and meet other kids. We got to hear from the PTA, the Spanish Club leaders, the principal, and other school staff members. I always thought I'd homeschool, but I felt unprepared, and now after going to this event, I feel really comfortable with the school she'll be attending. I got a really good vibe from the principal and just the whole experience. The principal actually taught Lacy's cousin a few years back, which was really fun to find out.
I can't believe my baby's going to go to kindergarten. And she'll be one of the youngest ones there, since her birthday is 6 weeks before the cutoff.
Stupid me forgot her birth certificate and proof of address. I'll bring it in later this week. Lacy would really like to attend a BBQ on Friday that the school is holding. Maybe we'll do it then.
How did this happen? She isn't supposed to start Kindergarten so soon! She's my baby!

Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary
How does your garden grow? Hopefully like gangbusters!
Today we worked a lot in the garden. Here's what we have so far.
The salad box, with various types of lettuce greens, plus some swiss chard, carrots radishes and beets. We also have an artichoke that came back from last year. I thought they died off in the winter, but they came back even after tilling the garden. They are some very determined plants! And I'm hoping for some artichokes this year! Any bare spots in the garden are due to either slugs or cats. I will win the war against these critters!
Behind the salad box, we have our peas. Four different varieties, actually. I'm very excited for harvesting them in the near future! They're already starting to climb! I've also planted a few other plants in there with them that are good companions to peas-- onions, carrots, and a few other things. They should be going strong once the peas are done for in the hot summer.
Not pictured is the bean/corn box. Corn and beans are good companion plants, so I put them in a box together. They have not come up yet. This box is next to the fence behind the pea box.
We also have the girls' boxes. Lacy has planted many different things in her box. It should be interesting when everything starts to really get growing. Rose's box has a few sweet peas just sprouting, and she also has some beans in there. If she's planted anything else, it will be a surprise! I tried keeping her box empty for longer because I wanted to have a place for her to dig until we got new sand for the sandbox.
The next box has lots of different types of root vegetables. Parsnips, salsify, turnips, beets, onions and carrots are all just starting to come up. I'm very excited to taste some new things this summer/fall (though I hear parnsips taste best after sitting in the garden all winter, being harvested in spring).
We have another small box with onions and parsnips that I planted a couple weeks before the big root veggie box. They're really coming up well, but cats and Rose have digged in this box! Argh!
On the other side of the house, we have our strawberry/spinach patch. These two are great companions and really play well together. They should both produce more vigerously because they have eachother. And I'm hoping since half of the strawberries are everbearing, it will make even more of a difference on the strawberries. The spinach is still itty bitty, but it's coming up nicely.
We planted about half our potatoes in our potato hill, and we also planted various members of the cabbage family in the box nearby. This planting happened today, so no sproutlets yet. Soon, I hope!
And finally, we worked hard on our tomatoes today. We have 8 that we planted in a box along with other good companion plants, which are mint, chives, carrots and onions. We're really excited at the size of the back six tomatoes! We just got those today, but the two puny ones in front we got a few weeks ago. And all but one are heirlooms. In the foreground is a rhubarb plant that a neighbor gave us. We're still looking for its final home.
Lastly, we planted five upside down tomatoes. We're very excited about these! We have three of the same upside down varieties also in the box, so it will be an interesting experiment to see what produces the best!
I'll update this blog later on in the summer to see the progress of my garden! I still have lots to plant, including squash, more corn and beans, and potatoes!

Now she's having a sweet day
Lacy woke up happy (albeit early) this morning. She asked me some questions about her laundry, as in, why the heck are all my clothes dirty.
"I'm sorry honey, I'm a bad mom."
"You're not a bad mom. You're just crazy."
So there you have it. That's her way of making me feel better about getting behind on my motherly duties.

... when she gets kicked out of Primary. Fortunately, a little relaxation in my bed watching "The Sound of Music" made things all better.
Until 7 o'clock. Then her timer went off. She was DONE (and so was Rose). Unfortunately, we were in a social setting, which made for a bit of a dramatic exit. OK, a very dramatic exit. It's so hard to be social with little kids! And we are very social people!
I think she was tired. We tried getting her to bed early the night before, but she played in her bed for a while before finally falling asleep. Fortunately, tomorrow she can sleep in. And sleep in she shall!

The Hills are Alive
...with the sound of music!
We borrowed the DVD from the library the other day, and today seemed like the perfect day to watch it. And Lacy LOVED IT! She was hooked from the first note. She loved Julie Andrews. Watching it with my daughters made me so incredibly happy. I have a long relationship with "The Sound of Music," and have loved it since I was a little girl.
Here is my sister and I, singing our version of "So Long, Farewell."
Yes, we're performing the beginning "cuckoo" portion of the song.
I have been singing "Edelweiss" to Lacy and Rose since they were babies. And now my baby is learning the rest of the songs. She was singing "Do Re Mi" (the "Do, a deer" song) for a week before we ever got the DVD. I'm quite sure she'll learn a few more of the songs in the next week. She was absolutely glued to the television during this movie.
So, I'd like to borrow more musicals from the library to build on her love of musicals. Anything with dancing and beautiful dresses strikes her fancy. We have a few in mind that we'd like to borrow ("The Music Man," "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" are two we specifically mentioned), but I'd love to hear your suggestions for musicals to borrow that a four year old girl would love!

Our Adventure
Thursday afternoon, I made a date with Lacy and Rose to go on An Adventure on Friday. We planned out our trip, Lacy picked out an outfit she wanted to wear, slept with it in her bed, and promptly changed her mind Friday morning before we set out to go.
We started off by driving down to the farmer's market. Once there, we walked over to the bus stop and caught the bus that goes up to the Capitol Campus. The girls were extremely excited to get to ride the bus, and had a fun time of it. The best part about it is this particular bus is free, so it doesn't cost me a thing to entertain my kids!
At the campus, we walked to the World War II Memorial and Rose stomped in some puddles. Then we walked over to the cherry trees which are in full bloom. We pretended we were in a house with a flower roof, and had a fun time in the process. We walked over to the bus stop and caught the exact same bus we rode up on, which was just finishing the Capitol Campus loop (we got off at the first stop at the campus). Rose was thrilled when the bus started coming up to the stop and screamed out, "A ORANGE BUS! A ORANGE BUS!" practically bursting from excitement.

We got off at the farmer's market and walked around for a few minutes before stopping and watching a glass bead artist make some beads. That was very interesting to see. Across from her booth was a stand selling plants. We bought four strawberry plants and two flowers, one for each girl. I'm not sure where we'll plant them yet.
Next, we went to the booth that gives free apples to kids. The girls both picked out an apple and I bought a couple of asian pears. Then we stopped at one of the bakeries at the market and we each got a cookie. We ended out trip at the market by eating our treats under some covered picnic tables, which just so happen to be in front of a stage. We got to enjoy live music while we ate. It makes me happy to be able to expose my kids to live music.
When we left the market, I still had a few things I needed to pick up at the store. Including milk, since I made yogurt yesterday that ended up with a consistency of ricotta cheese (it was my first time, my next batch earlier tonight turned out much better!). I suspect that the ultra-pasteurized milk I used may have caused problems, so I found some organic milk that was not ultra-pasteurized. We went to a different grocery store than usual, and I remembered why I rarely shop there. The store is absolutely wonderful, but their prices are much higher than my usual grocery store!
Finally, we returned home and the girls ate my asian pear. We got Pinocchio from the library on Thursday, so the girls decided to watch it. Lacy really loved it! I was surprised, actually.
I thought I would have worn out the girls well enough to get them to go to bed early tonight, but Lacy didn't fall asleep until after 10, and Rose had trouble getting to sleep, too. I'm expecting more restless nights during this weekend and the sugar highs that are bound to occur.

My sister Leslie and I were planning on going out to Lattin's Cider Mill together today, but she forgot she was watching a friend's kids. Since Dave went out fishing with his buddy Bill and his boys, I invited my friend Emily, Bill's wife, to come with us instead. We missed having Leslie and the gang with us, but had a great time with Emily and her daughters Eowyn and Esme. We had lots of fun seeing all the baby animals! Rose was especially enamored with the goats, and Esme's favorites were the birds. We all had a great time looking at the cute babies and mamas, eating fresh donuts, and enjoying the sights and sounds of nature. What a wonderful day.
This picture cracks me up. Check out the escapee in the top left-hand corner! There were a few goats out in the open that the kids got to interact with. This is so much better than a petting zoo!

Rose and a mama goat. She kept talking about the mommies and the daddies. I didn't see any daddies anywhere around, but there sure were a lot of mommies!
Emily and I both appreciated these chickens. They were quite lovely. It was fun to see so many heritage breeds of poultry at the farm!

You may notice Lacy's top lip looks funny. She slipped last night in the shower and ended up with a huge fat lip! She was really scared when it happened because facial wounds tend to bleed a lot, but other than a little soreness today and an inability to eat an apple that isn't cut up, she is doing just fine today. Unfortunately for her, she gets her coordination from her mother!
The biggest benefit of having great weather is being able to do stuff like this. The girls haven't watched any TV at all since Monday, and only today did they watch a short 30 minute non-commercial video from the library. They are so much better behaved when they don't watch TV and play outside all day. I'm hoping to have many more TV-free days in our future! We will be participating in TV turnoff week later this month, and I encourage all my readers to participate with their families as well!

Easter Eggs
On Monday night for Family Home Evening, we decided to dye Easter eggs for an activity after we had a lesson about Jesus' Resurrection and why we celebrate Easter (Lacy is finally starting to remember that it isn't because the Easter bunny comes!). I do remember how "fun" it was last year, and the resulting stain on our wood paneling from Rose being such a big helper. Heh. There is a reason there is only one major egg-dying holiday per year! And I am certainly glad I have a whole year to recover from this experience, and I'm hoping that Rose will be less psychotically excited about it next year!
We now have a profit on Dave's fishing license
Dave and his buddy Bill calculated out the market value of the fish Dave, Bill and Bill's sons caught today, and deducted cost of the fishing licenses that they both bought recently for the new season (which begins officially at the end of this month), fuel and supplies, and discovered that they now have made a "profit" on the license, on the very first day they used the licenses!
All totaled, they caught 17 fish. Two got away attached to a stringer. One was released. The remainder were brought home. Dave caught the large one, which weighed approximately 6 pounds. Tonight we ate seven fish for dinner with Bill and his family. Rose ate more than half a fish, all on her own! The rest of the fish, including the large one are soaking in a brine right now to be made into smoked trout that we will all enjoy. I'm so glad that the guys were able to have such a great day fishing together!

Stop to Smell the Flowers
Every time we go grocery shopping, Lacy has to smell all the flowers in the floral department. I don't mind, I think it's rather darling. And most people who see her smelling the flowers smile as they pass by.
Lacy absolutely LOVES roses. Last time we were there, she exclaimed excitedly, "Mom, LOOK! They have ROSES!"
Rose, confused, replied, "My flowers?" I think she was expecting to get something from the flower shop after Lacy's exclamation.
I tried to explain that she is named Rose and those flowers are also named rose, but I don't think she quite gets it yet. Of course, some amount of confusion with names in our family is necessary. I did, after all, name my oldest child the same name as the town in which she was born (for a while, she thought that the library actually belonged to her). As my brother likes to say, at least she wasn't born in Humptulips.
